The Wetherby Cricket League will be looking to trial a new 8 a side T20 format in the 2019 junior season. The modified format is part of a wider strategy of the ECB to increase standards and participation.
- More accurate bowling
- Safer bowling technique
- Improved batting, bowling and fielding development
- Increase in playable balls, attempted shots and scoring zones
Research by the ECB and Loughborough University in this format showed a 15% increase in playable deliveries and 56% increase in shots being played either straight or to the offside.
Retire at 25 runs
Batters have x2 lives
Maiden over is a dismissal
Players must bowl at least 2 overs
Fielders rotate (except wicket keeper)
Pitch length 18 yds.
Matchball – hardball 4.75oz
8 Players per side
Wetherby Cricket League
Given this format is at the trial stage, the WCL will NOT be replacing the regular U11 pairs on a Monday night. The proposal is for a new smaller competition to be played on a Friday nights during peak weeks (beginning 7th June) for about 5 or 6 matches.
Whilst the format is U10/U11, given the standard within the Wetherby Junior section we would expect players to be U10 or below with any U11s being of a development standard. Stronger U11s would be expected to play U13 cricket to aid their own development.
2019 Junior League entry forms for all sections will be released in the next few weeks, therefore please consider if this new format is appropriate for your club and structure.
